Learning Goal

During this unit, students will explore five key practices of healthy relationships: self-compassion, empathy, trust, effective communication, and consent.

Learning Summary

Lesson 1: Healthy Relationships with Others Start With a Healthy Relationship With Yourself
Students will define the term self-compassion and will learn about three components of self-compassion: self-kindness, mindfulness, and common humanity.

Lesson 2: The Intersection of Self-Compassion and Empathy
Students will experience a self compassion mindfulness activity.

Lesson 3: Seven Elements of Trust
Students will learn about seven elements of trust using Dr. Brené Brown’s BRAVING acronym and will reflect on how BRAVING practices impacted trust in real-life situations.

Lesson 4: Key Elements of Effective Communication
Students will learn and practice two key elements of effective communication: active listening and using “I” statements.

Lesson 5: The Role of Consent in Healthy Relationships
Students will learn what consent looks and sounds like as it relates to their relationships with family, friends and romantic partners.

Project: Taking It Deeper
The final project of this unit will ask students to choose one aspect of healthy relationships that they would like to intentionally work on and practice daily over the next two weeks. Then, they will do short class presentations about their project.
