Learning Summary

Students can struggle to identify their strengths and weaknesses while understanding how to ask for help and use courage to face challenges. The lesson encourages students to think of their own areas of growth at school, when they can ask for help, and how they can use the courage to overcome their challenges.

This lesson starts with a mindfulness practice in which students focus on their balance. You then introduce the students to the concept that we each have our own strengths and weaknesses and you discuss options for dealing with weaknesses. You introduce the idea that they can face weaknesses using courage. Students then identify their own areas of strength and weakness and consider what they can do about their weaknesses. Students then discuss why it can be difficult to talk about and face our weaknesses. Students end by reflecting in their journal on their own strengths as well as areas of improvement.

The Mindful Moment brings some movement into online learning. Make sure your students can see you balancing on your camera. Have students turn their cameras off so they do not focus on their peers but rather on their balance.

This lesson does not require any modifications for live online delivery. Send out a copy of the graphic organizer or have students create their own.

After the Mindful Moment, present to your class the different definitions found on the slide deck. For the activity, send out a copy of the graphic organizer or have students create their own. As a closing, have students create their own super hero crest (found in the additional activity section).
